During this project, we will investigate the presence of three groups of anthropogenic chemicals:
- heavy metals (Hg, Cd, Cu and Pb, Zn, Ni),
- poly aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and
- Tributyltin (TBT)
in sediments at the coast/in the fjord between the five major harbours of North Jutland: Hanstholm, Hirtshals, Skagen, Frederikshavn and Aalborg.
Further, we will test an innovative method based electrochemistry principles for remediation of contaminated seawater in a controlled environment at Aalborg University (AAU) Laboratories. This method produces a calcareous deposition that traps the heavy metals. The calcareous deposition grows on metal cathodes under sea water electrolysis and could be employed as coastal protection.
The project is funded by Velux Foundation and runs from 2018 to 2020.
